This story includes a wide range of emotional content, entangled with romance, action, angst and humour  -- much like real life.

I've been told it's erotic, but that happened by accident.

Star Trek -- who DOESN"T like it?

  • May. 10th, 2009 at 10:06 AM
Kar-el by Mike Grell

I've come to realize that their are two kinds of people who don't like Star Trek.

The first, on the whole, simply don't get it because they can't understand it. They can't accept imaginative fiction with concepts, ideas and metaphor that needs a thought process. They are the masses who watch a lot of reality television, top ten shows and, are now, constantly texting and twittering LOL and are glued to their Ipod.

The second are people that don't watch TV at all or refuse to watch the show because it is "Sci-Fi". Despite their lack of knowledge about the show, they will  still talk about it in a derogatory snide fashion and will prejudge Star Trek fandom on their skewed impressions gleaned from SNL, other media and MADTV.

I have taught high school for 25+ years and this broad generalization applies to both faculty and students.

New Star Trek Music gone like Vulcan

fighting words
Oh, I saw it -- yes it had awesome casting and acting ,overly bright sets, but hey -- ACTION
and FUNNY -- yes, it was funny
I laughed loud -- probably too loud since all the die hard trekkers had gone to the premiere and I was with an audience of Trek dilettantes..

I've read a number of the reviews and I'm not here to do another one.

I do have to ask a BIG and IMPORTANT question.

Where the H E DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS was the MUSIC???!!!

The film I saw must have been unfinished -- they can"t have released THE Star Trek film of the post millennium with only ONE crummy theme repeating over and over and over ad nauseum through the entire film.

We should be up in arms about this -- every other star trek film, no matter how bad or good, had INCREDIBLE soundtrack music, resulting in spectacular soundtrack  CDs,  We all loved the deep rumbling Klingon Theme, the reworked and beautiful Original Theme, the Vulcan Theme Khan's Theme etc.

This film?

Had an opening...uh tune -- sort of a progression and then, wait for it ...
A KEY CHANGE
wow

repeatrepeatrepeatrepeatrepeatrepeatrepeatrepeatrepeat end credits
original theme
too late

I think they ran out of bucks after hiring everyone and figured Star trek fan don't care about the music. How incredibly disappointing and insulting.
I think the film needs a redo with an actual musical sound track

then it WOULD be awesome.

A Smallville script that makes sense

  • Mar. 16th, 2009 at 10:45 PM
Kar-el by Mike Grell
Boy this was fun. LJ doesn't like cut and paste from WORD, does it?

As the inconsistencies and time paradoxes, OOC behavior and reset button plots pile up like so much firewood in Clarks barn, all we can do is watch like witnesses of a car crash --  at once fascinated and horrified.
Cheer up true believers -- I've written a script -- as good as any we've seen since season 3 -- and it deals with a MAJOR plot point. The elephant in the corn field, if you will.
Enjoy :)

“CARPOOL”

TEASER

FADE IN:

Dawn wants to break on the outskirts of Smallville, but it’s still too early.  The dim glow of dew blankets the cornfields and pasture.

INT. CHLOE’S CAR – NIGHT

Chloe, Clark, Lois and Jimmy sit in relative discomfort considering the small size of the Yaris. Jimmy and Lois sleep in the backseat and Clark is folded into the front passenger seat, while Chloe, yawning, drives.

                      JIMMY

          ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ— uhsnarklsnuff…

Is Jimmy sleeping, or turning into Doomsday? Read on.... )

 NOTE
The events in this script happen just before the wedding and just after Clark mind-wipes Chloe. A narrow window indeed.

And, unlike most of the situations that change drastically from week to week, this unchallenged plot point lives on. And on... and on...

In love with the obsolete Palm Pilot

  • Mar. 15th, 2009 at 3:10 PM
Kar-el by Mike Grell

What can I say? I like to write -- sometimes I love to write -- and sometimes I have to write. Other times, I want to write, but I can't write -- because of lack of writing implements. So I use old technology -- pen, any paper I can find . (Be aware this is when I'm away from my laptop -- always the easiest alternative.)

I'm sure you agree that ideas are like butterflies and escape if you don't capture them at the moment they visit. Unfortunately, my butterflies, once penned, are maniacal dragons with no semblance to the lovely idea-monarchs I'd frantically scribbled. Two days later, no, two minutes later, my handwriting has turned Hieroglyph and I can barely understand what letters I wrote --much less what language.

No one diagnosed me cause I'm too old, but I'm pretty sure I have a form of dysgraphia. I cannot cursive to save my life (seriously, if I had only two minutes to write down why I should not be put to death and they were judging on how lovely my hand-written letter looked -- well, I'm dead.)

So, maybe I'm a visual-spatial learner and it all goes back to being born with the cord wrapped around my neck. Twice. I was blue. I guess there was some oxygen deprivation (I've always made jokes about this) and just now I was searching 'poor handwriting' and found this (page 4).

My point? My Lifedrive died a sudden death and now ai have no portable writing tool. I went crazy calling local computer stores to replace it with another handheld and discovered that none of the young things knew what a PDA, Palm pilot or Handheld is. I suddenly felt like I was in the Twilight Zone (not the first time.)

I discovered this enlightened soulmate wishlist for THE PERFECT PDA FOR WRITERS. I didn't realize till the end that is was just a wishlist -- written in 2002 -- yet to be fulfilled.

I broke down and ordered the T/X directly from Palm.

My Lifedrive, which was a dear companion for both reading and writing lies in pieces since I followed this video

I cried a little.

Donezipil no more!

  • Feb. 27th, 2009 at 10:30 PM
Kar-el by Mike Grell
Donezipil or Aricept -- whatever you call it, don't give it to your loved one for late-onset Alzheimer's or age-related dementia.

My mom was on it for the last two years and over that time her memory got worse, she had confusion and fears at odd times, and worst she had awful recurring nightmares and sleep terrors and other sleep disturbances. We even tried her on anti-psychotics for a time. A total mistake which threatened to turn her into a zombie that slept the day away.

I had a moment of clarity and took her off the Aricept 3 weeks ago. It's like I got my mom back! Sure, she still has awful short-term memory, and she repeats stuff, but her sense of humour, her ability to hold a conversation, and her personality has returned. She can watch a TV show again and follow it, and hasn't had ONE nightmare or sleep disturbance. This, despite the fact that she had to have a tooth pulled and was in great pain (usually sickness makes dementia sufferers more confused, but Mom's been fine!)

I accept  that she has age-related dementia and we don't know where it will go, or how it will end, but I will never put her on memory meds again.

Update on my Mom -- Today is a good day :)

  • Feb. 22nd, 2009 at 12:38 PM
Kar-el by Mike Grell

Hi
I feel I have to update everyone on my Mom and her well-being. (wrapped up with my own, of course.) I have moved forward A LOT with how I cope with her changing needs. I have packed my bookshelf with current books on the subject of Age-Related Dementia and Alzeimer's and feel I have a better perspective now.

It's still hard work, and can be very sad, but I am now able to be more empathetic to my Mom, and my frustration and anger are now about what the symptoms do to her rather than warping my feelings about her.

This is a BIG deal. As anyone caring for a a loved one with a terminal illmess can tell you, you go through a real grieving process with all the stages, and I am close to the acceptance stage.

This does not mean that I have no hope -- but I no longer hope for a CURE. I believe that my Mom, who is 91, is experiencing brain aging, which may or may not be Alzeimers -- which itself  may or may not be a form of brain aging!

I focus now on my relationship with her, helping her have pleasant experiences in her day and helping her through the confusing moments. My capacity for patience has exponentially increased now that I no longer focus on her condition. My attitude change came with time and a lot of great books -- listed below -- hopefully some of you can get some help with your own loved one too.
